Security forces foil two attempted infiltrations near Gaza Strip
By Amos Harel, Haaretz Correspondent, and Haaretz Service
8:53:PM Thursday, Jul 10, 2003

Four Palestinians were arrested Thursday night in two separate infiltration attempts near the Gaza Strip. Two of the four were moderately wounded by security forces as they were apprehended.

The four were unarmed and apparently entered Israel to look for work, or to carry out criminal activity.

In the town of Kerem Shalom, near the Israeli border with Gaza, a Palestinian was detained after he was shot by the town's security officer.

At almost the same time, three Palestinians were intercepted by IDF troops between Kibbutz Mefalsim and Kibbutz Kfar Aza, also in the south of the country. One of the men was wounded by IDF fire.

The Sweetest Revenge
Talk of a ‘Jewish renaissance’ where Hitler once ruled
8:54:PM Thursday, Jul 10, 2003

When Shlomo Afanasev and his parents set out to make a new life for themselves late last year, they had choices. The country where they lived—Uzbekistan—was an economic basket case, and its 2,000-year-old Jewish community had all but disappeared.

IT WAS TIME TO GO to a place where they’d be welcomed as Jews, and where they’d have opportunities. They considered going to Israel. But like thousands of other Jews from the former Soviet Union, they decided instead to settle in Germany. “The political and economic situation in Israel is terrible,” says Afanasev, speaking over a kosher lunch in a Berlin yeshiva. “Here life is so much better.”

Jewish immigration and an increasingly vibrant cultural life have even fueled talk of a German-Jewish renaissance. “We never thought it could happen,” says Michael May, executive director of Berlin’s Jewish Community organization. “Jewish life is thriving here again 60 years after the Holocaust.” In perhaps the most delicate of ironies, Germany last year passed Israel as the leading destination for Jewish emigrants from the former Soviet Union: 19,262 admissions, compared with 18,878 for Israel.

... Meanwhile, anti-Semitic graffiti and street attacks on Jews have been rising again (most seem to be committed by Muslim youths). Some Jewish leaders are calling it “a miracle” that Jewish life is flourishing in Germany at all. “What better revenge against Hitler,” says Rabbi Yehudi Teichtal, director of the Chabad Lubavitch Berlin, “than when I take a hundred happy Jewish children from summer camp and walk with them through the old streets of Berlin?”

Rabbi Leibel Shapiro Farbrengs in Lakewood
9:09:PM Thursday, Jul 10, 2003

Last Thursday night the Lakewood Chabad shul held its Gimmel Tamuz farbrengen. Rabbi Leiel Schapiro from Miami, FL absolutely won over a Lakewood crowd that was curious to see what a farbrengen on Gimmel Tamuz would be like. Rabbi Nochum Greenwald, the Rabbi of the Lakewood Chabad Congregation, which has been in existence for just over one year, was met with tremendous praise when he walked into the Nadvorna Shtibel the next morning. Other members of the Kehila were met with the same enthusiasm when walking around Lakewood Friday morning.

Rabbi Shapiro eloquently depicted what the Rebbe was to the world before Gimmel Tamuz and the Hashpa'ah of the Rebbe after Gimmel Tamuz. The farbrengen saw between 80 - 100 people come and go all the way up to 1:30 a.m. when the fabrengen broke up and a 12 passenger van left Lakewood to go to the Ohel.

The crowd was made up of Chassidim and Litvisher yidden most of which have been very impressed by Rabbi Greenwald's shiurim and were not at all let down by the farbrengen. Since its inception, Chabad of Lakewood has built up to a Shul that has between 40 - 50 mispallelim on Shabbos and the shul recently opened up the first men's mikvah on the south side of the lake (an area heavily populated by frum families).

The shul is now in the midst of drawing up architectural plans for a brand new building. There is already talk of Lubavitcher chinuch coming in the very near future.

This past Sunday morning more than 45 Shluchim and Shluchos gathered at the Shluchim Office’s for a conference on the up and coming successful Chabad program ”Friendship Circle”. The presentation described the basics of what it entails to properly run the Friendship Circle in a new community.

All who attended found it very informative and extremely insightful.  Amongst the many Shluchim that were there were representatives from many cities in the United States as well as Turkey, Canada, and South America.

The program was organized and presented by Rabbi Zalman and Toba Grossbaum from New Jersey. Other speakers included Mrs. Esther Kaltmann from Columbus, Ohio and Mrs. Devorah Leah Pinson from West Bloomfield, Michigan.

The program was made possible with a lot of help from Rabbi Levi and Bassie Shemtov from Michigan who are the founders of this tremendous Kiddush Lubavitch.

Special thanks to Rabbis Gedalya and Moshe Shemtov and Yankee Rosenblum and the Shluchim Office staff for all their generous assistance with the event.

RABBI YOSEF AVROHOM HELLER SPEAKS OUT
SNS EXCLUSIVE
11:41:PM Thursday, Jul 10, 2003

On Thursday, Rabbi Yosef Avrohom HaLevi Heller a member of the Badatz of Crown Heights and Rosh Kollel Menachem under the auspices of the Rebbe’s Mazkirus issued a letter addressed to both current and former members of Kollel.

Rabbi Heller writes that in light of the tragic incidents of late everyone should be Mechazek in the fundamentals of Yiras Shomayim, Torah, Tefilla and Mitzvos each person according to his level and in the areas he knows that he is lacking.

Rabbi Heller goes on to give 4 suggestions which we have attempted to summarize below.

1) Strong Hachlota not to be involved in any type of Machlokes even in just speech or thought. Machlokes is issur Gomur.

2) Diligence and Chayos in learning. At the very least a kevius in Nigleh and Chassidus every single day each person davka according to his level.

3) To daven all 3 Tefillos saying each word carefully and with pirush hamillos and not to daven late and definitely not to speak during davening or Krias hatorah

4) To be careful with one’s self and family with regard to everything that is connected to Tzinus and “Goyishkeit”.(clothing, newspapers, radio etc.)

Rabbi Heller ends off with a Brocha “Shnizkeh kulanu leyeshua ulenechama bekiflayim, bifrat ubichlal Begeula HaShleima Bkorov mamosh”
