IDF confirms at least 20 gunmen killed in ground offensive

Saturday, Jan 03, 2009

At least 30 Hamas gunmen were reported killed as IDF troops swept into the northern Gaza Strip on Saturday night, encountering fierce resistance from Hamas forces entrenched in fortifications just over the border.

IDF sources said that the goal was to conquer territory in northern Gaza, including rocket launch sites. Soldiers from the Armored Corps, Engineering Corps, and Paratroopers, Givati, Golani brigades were participating in the fighting, with at least four brigades' worth of troops inside the Gaza Strip.

The sources said that a majority of the rockets fired into Beersheba and Ashdod were launched from the northern Gaza Strip.

One of the major aims of the operation was also to deliver a serious blow to the Hamas military wing, which the IDF estimated had not been severely weakened under the air campaign. CONTINUE...

Hey Teves Underground in Ofakim

Saturday, Jan 03, 2009

This year’s Hey Teves farbrengen in Ofakim took place in the Chabad bomb-shelter. Rabbi Amos Kaye spoke to the crowd about the various open miracles that have occurred over the past few days. Rabbi Gechtman talked about the Geula, while Rabbi Avner Amitai addressed the importance of unity at home and in the shelters among all sectors of society.

After the farbrengen, everyone sang and danced together joyfully until the early hours of the morning. Shliach Rabbi Yisroel Hershkowitz inspired everyone to continue running activities in the bomb-shelters around the city, providing help and encouragement to local residents.

Chabad is also increasing its activities in the bomb-shelters. The Chabad House is now distributing hot meals, reading material, and coloring books to the bomb-shelters, providing food and activities for families to while away the long hours underground.

Play tells story of how Maccabees recaptured Temple

Saturday, Jan 03, 2009

Last Monday, which was the eighth and final day of Hanukkah, a group of nine children and a few parents stepped through a curtained doorway and entered a time machine.

Professor Schnoodle, a wild-eyed scientist with bushy hair, thick round glasses, and a lab coat, introduced himself and his assistant, Professor Schnitzel, then began pushing a series of buttons to get his time machine humming.

Lights started flashing, gears began spinning, and the professor became increasingly excited as his gigantic machine gained momentum.

"Fasten your kippahs, everyone!" Professor Schnoodle warned, sparking laughter from the young audience members.continue...
