This week, the Yated Neeman newspaper reported on the passing of the late Rav Yosef Sholom Eliyashiv, a leading halachic authority in the chareidi world.
The report included an interview with Rav Eliyashiv’s grandson, who related that a Chabad doctor named Dr. Aharonov who had come from Russia treated his grandfather for a heart condition seventy years ago. This doctor was very dedicated and he determined what Rav Eliyashiv should eat and drink and how to strengthen his heart. The treatment was clearly effective, as the Rav’s heart would beat for another seventy years!
The grandson recalled that after treatment, the doctor would sing the niggun, “Essen est...,” but he would sing slightly different words: “Essen Sich nisht, trinken trinkt Sich nisht.” The grandson recalled that his mother would sing this Chabad niggun to her children, and it was clearly a part of his childhood memories.
