In memory of Rabbi Levi Yitzchok ben R' Zalman Yuda Deitsch OBM
Learning Torah ...
Why has the land perished and laid waste like a wilderness... because they have forsaken My Torah... (Jeremiah 9:11-12)
The destruction of the First Temple and the subsequent exile was only because of lack of Torah study... G-d would have overlooked even cardinal sins so long as they did not forsake Torah study. (Eicha Rabah, Introduction 2; Jerusalem Talmud, Chagigah 1:7)
Without understanding, there remains part of us that fights with our convictions and values. Without study, our commitment to our values will eventually fail. A lack of knowledge caused exile, and spreading knowledge brings redemption.
It is not enough for our faith to guide our actions, it must change the way that we think. Through Torah study we internalize our faith by understanding who we are, our mission in life, and the impact that we have. This strengthens our conviction to the point that negativity becomes unthinkable.
Our commitment to learning and to spreading knowledge is the greatest safeguard of our freedom, and will ultimately bring Mashiach.
